A proclamation in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

The Parks Tacoma Board adopted a proclamation at its most recent meeting recognizing January 20 as Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. This is in conjunction with MLK Day of Service activities that will take place at three sites across Tacoma where volunteers will join together to care for their local parks. For 30 years, AmeriCorps has led MLK Day of Service encouraging people across America to volunteer in honor of Dr. King’s legacy of community empowerment. As an agency that upholds core values of equity, inclusiveness and a commitment to being anti-racist, Parks Tacoma views MLK Day of Service as an important opportunity to build bridges and strengthen community bonds through service to our parks.

A proclamation in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
WHEREAS, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated annually in recognition of Dr. King’s work championing civil rights, racial justice and community service; and
WHEREAS, each year on this day, communities across America honor Dr. King’s legacy through volunteer events as part of MLK Day of Service organized by AmeriCorps; and
WHEREAS, Metro Parks participates in this nationwide day of service in order to bring people together to improve their local parks, strengthen community bonds and celebrate the life of one of our nation’s foremost leaders for civil rights and building communities; and
WHEREAS, community members of all ages can take part in MLK Day of Service by volunteering for park cleanup and habitat restoration at three event sites across Tacoma; and
WHEREAS, we thank Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For his lifelong commitment to justice, equity and building strong communities and commit to honor his legacy not just one day of the year, but every day in our work serving diverse communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Park Commissioners hereby recognizes January 20 as MLK Day of Service and encourages community members to take part in this important event honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The foregoing proclamation was adopted by the Board of Park Commissioners of the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma at a regularly scheduled meeting held on January 13, 2025.
