Parks Tacoma honors Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

The Board of Park Commissioners celebrated Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May by recognizing the work of two community partners that bring Asia Pacific culture to Parks Tacoma spaces. Hearts for Kids and Golden Bamboo Walking Group attended the Park Board meeting on May 12 and were presented with a proclamation honoring AANHPI Heritage Month.


A Proclamation in Celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

WHEREAS, May is celebrated nationally as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to honor the histories, contributions and experiences of the Asia Pacific community; and 

WHEREAS, many in our community whose heritage is rooted in these cultures have played a foundational role in Tacoma’s history and continue to shape our future as community members and leaders; and 

WHEREAS, Tacoma’s Asia Pacific community comprises nearly 10% of the city’s population and represents a diverse tapestry of national origins, beliefs, languages and cultural practices; and 

WHEREAS, Parks Tacoma has a responsibility as a steward of public spaces, events and programs to meet the unique and varied needs of our Asia Pacific community, as well as the opportunity to address racism, dispel stereotypes and forge shared understanding by uplifting Asia Pacific culture in our places and programs; and 

WHEREAS, Parks Tacoma’s ability to provide culturally relevant programming and community celebrations is made possible through essential partnerships with community organizations including the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, Golden Bamboo Walking Group, Hearts for Kids and others; and 

WHEREAS, we re-commit ourselves to working alongside these community leaders to incorporate Asia Pacific cultures and histories throughout our Park District. 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Park Commissioners do hereby honor May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in
recognition of the contributions to our community by Asia Pacific peoples of the past, present
and future.

The foregoing proclamation was adopted by the Board of Park Commissioners of the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma at a regularly scheduled meeting held on May 12, 2025.
