Celebrate diversity at Pride events and help eliminate prejudice in our community. Parks Tacoma recognizes that one of our greatest strengths is the diversity of our community. We stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and commit to working towards advancements for full acceptance and equality for all.

A Proclamation in Honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month
WHEREAS, Parks Tacoma recognizes that one of our greatest strengths is the diversity of our community, staff and volunteers; and
WHEREAS, the contributions that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and allied (LGBTQ+) communities have made and continue to make internationally, nationally and in Tacoma are greatly valued and appreciated; and
WHEREAS, while acknowledging that we may not have been as inclusive throughout our history, Parks Tacoma has stood in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community for decades including hosting “Out in the Park,” the predecessor of Tacoma Pride, from 1997, and
WHEREAS, we appreciate the Rainbow Center’s leadership and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, and will continue to work with them to develop programs, gender-inclusive language and policies that support and celebrate our LGBTQ+ communities; and
WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ Tacomans invite all to join them in July for the annual Tacoma Pride Festival to celebrate the history and culture of the LGBTQ+ community and gain greater appreciation for the differences that enrich us all; and
WHEREAS, Parks Tacoma is honored to contribute to Tacoma Pride 2022 with events such as Pride at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Northwest Trek, Movie in the Park with The Grand Cinema at People’s Park, Point Ruston Pride at Dune Peninsula, and Tacoma Earth Gay at Kandle Park; as well as raising Pride flags at Parks Tacoma Headquarters, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Northwest Trek, People’s Center, STAR Center, Center at Norpoint and Old Town Park;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Park Commissioners, hereby recognizes and honors the month of July 2022 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Tacoma. We encourage all Tacomans to eliminate prejudice where it exists and celebrate our diversity by joining us in this special observance of our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors.
The foregoing proclamation was adopted by the Board of Park Commissioners of the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma at a regularly scheduled meeting held on June 27, 2022.
