This historic park is getting new play equipment, selected by community.

Project Overview

During an inspection of the Ferry Park playground in mid-March 2023, staff discovered a broken component on the larger play unit, which is no longer manufactured and therefore could not be replaced. For the safety of children visiting the park, the unit was marked and scheduled for removal at the earliest possible time with signage placed to inform park users of the situation. After several months of engagement and collaboration with community, Parks Tacoma has landed on a final play structure design. Through several public surveys and pop-up community events, we have received input on the priorities and needs of the neighborhood to determine the right replacement play structures to best serve the families of Hilltop. The final designs voted for by community members are below.

You Spoke, We Listened!

The designs above are a direct result of the votes cast by community members in July 2023. You let us know what you wanted to see in the revamp of Ferry Park in May 2023, then you voted on the designs and colors we drafted based on those priorities. These are the final designs from several different angles, including a play structure for kids ages 2-5 and another for 5-12-year-olds.

Community members also weighed in on the colors we will use on the new equipment, and these four received the most votes: Purple, Lagoon, Limon, & Peacock. Great choices!

Planning Ferry Park

Timeline

Updated March 2025

  • In March 2023, for the safety of the children in our community, the large play structure at Ferry Park was removed. The equipment had been repaired multiple times, and replacements were no longer available for parts that had failed.
  • In April 2023, Parks Tacoma launched an interactive website to collect input from the community to help design the replacement playground.
  • In June 2023, we shared the survey data and our designer developed playground concepts. Families and neighbors turned out for a fun pop-up event on June 24 to kick off the voting for two new playgrounds that will be installed at Ferry Park by Spring/Summer 2025.
  • You spoke, we listened! Community has voted online for their favorite design concepts for playgrounds designed for both 2-5 year-olds and 5-12 year-olds, as well as their favorite colors.
  • Construction began in early January 2025 was completed in March.
  • A reopening celebration was held on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
