FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is being done to address the criminal activity at People’s Park?

Parks Tacoma is taking several steps to address safety concerns at People’s Park:

  • Cameras will be installed in July 2023 on a temporary basis.
  • Parks Tacoma continue to work closely with Tacoma Police Department to address criminal activities in and around the park.
  • Parks Tacoma is partnering with the City of Tacoma’s Homeless Engagement Alternative Liaison (HEAL) team to provide outreach to people experiencing homelessness to connect them with resources and safer shelter options.

Why did Parks Tacoma install cameras at People’s Park?

Parks Tacoma is installing cameras temporarily in People’s Park to help deter crime.

The cameras are not meant to deter families or individuals who are using the park respectfully.

Additionally, Parks Tacoma continues to work closely with Tacoma Police Department to address criminal activities in and around the park and are partnering with the City of Tacoma’s Homeless Engagement Alternative Liaison (HEAL) team to provide outreach to people experiencing homelessness to connect them with resources and safer shelter options.

When will the cameras be removed?

The cameras are being installed on a temporary basis and will be removed when criminal activity has been addressed.

We recognize that cameras may create a feeling of unwelcoming, and we are committed to find a more long-term solution to safety through partnerships and further crime prevention through environmental design practices.

Safety is a priority for Parks Tacoma. We want to create an inclusive, safe and fun environment for everyone to play, learn and grow.
