A 20 by 38 foot Harbor Flag welcomes people from all nations into the Port of Tacoma from Thea’s Park.
Thea’s Park is 3.4 acres in size and was established in 1996 at the entrance to the Foss Waterway in Tacoma’s downtown waterfront. A 20 by 38 foot harbor flag welcomes people from all nations and a giant globe creates an instantly recognizable landmark from land or sea.
Watch ships and tugboats coming and going, cranes lifting cargo at the busy Port, take a stroll along the esplanade, visit the historic warehouses, and the Murray Morgan Bridge.
You may also glimpse floatplanes, harbor seals, sea lions, and kayakers. A gangway from the Park takes visitors out onto the North Moorage float where guests can tie up their boat for the day.
Harbor Flag Project Memorial Globe
The globe was installed in 2002 and dedicated September 11, 2002. It was a joint project between the Tacoma Sister Cities organization, City of Tacoma, and Parks Tacoma. This memorial 8′ Globe and neighboring flag are meant to extend a message of peace and unity to the global community following the 9-11 terrorist attacks. The globe shows the positions of Tacoma’s 10 sister cities and 5 sister port cities.

Peace Pole
A new sculpted metal pole was installed in September 2021 to replace the aging original pole. It is encircled with words of peace in Lushootseed (the language of the Puyallup Tribe), English and the languages of Tacoma’s 13 sister cities. Read more
Kayak and Paddleboard Launch
Launch your kayak or paddleboard from either Thea’s Park on the west end or Waterway Park on the east end, just under the 509 Bridge. The Foss Waterway is a great place for beginners to paddle. This 1.5-mile-long inlet offers calm water and view of the city.
