A proclamation in celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month
WHEREAS, Pride is celebrated by millions of people in America and around the world to commemorate demonstrations and highlight the histories, identities and experiences of LGBTQ+ people and to continue to advocate for equal rights and protections; and
WHEREAS, we are committed to stewarding our parks and places as spaces where all members of our community know they are welcome, safe and free to be themselves; and
WHEREAS, we observe National Pride Month in June and Tacoma Pride Month in July by flying Pride flags at venues throughout our District to affirm our commitment to LGBTQ+ rights; and
WHEREAS, we are honored to celebrate Pride alongside our community at events including a Pride Celebration at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park, and the return of Tacoma Pride Festival to Wright Park, where it originated in 1997; and
WHEREAS, Parks Tacoma is grateful for the contributions and leadership of our LGBTQ+ staff, partners and community members with a commitment to work together to achieve full acceptance and equality for all.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Park Commissioners hereby honors and recognizes June as National LGBTQ+ Pride Month and July as Tacoma Pride Month. We encourage members of our community to learn about LGBTQ+ history and take part in celebrations hosted by the Tacoma Pride Festival.
The foregoing proclamation was adopted by the Board of Park Commissioners of the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma at a regularly scheduled meeting held on June 8, 2026.
