Disability Recreation and Resource Fair marks third year of connecting community and inclusive resources
For the third year in a row, Parks Tacoma will host the Disability Recreation and Resource Fair on Saturday, January 24 at the STAR Center.
More than 30 local organizations will be brought together to connect individuals with disabilities, families and caregivers with inclusive programs and community resources.
The free event highlights vendors and services supporting a wide range of disabilities—physical and cognitive, visible and invisible—and offers information on adaptive and therapeutic recreation, advocacy, education, healthcare, caregiver support, paralysis support and more. A food truck will be available on-site.
The Disability Recreation and Resource Fair has become a key opportunity to connect community members with disabilities and their families and caregivers to services available in the Tacoma area.
Parks Tacoma Adaptive & Specialized Coordinator, Katt Merilo, said the goal is to reduce barriers to recreation access and bridge the gap between what the disability community wants to do and where they currently are.
“The fair has become a gathering point for the disability community, and a celebration of all the activities, supports, and interests that enrich our lives,” Merilo said.
The event is hosted at STAR Center, designed to be accessible and welcoming for all visitors, with ADA-designated parking stalls, single-story access throughout the facility, gender neutral family bathrooms and ADA-accessible bathroom stalls.
Parks Tacoma Adaptive and Specialized Recreation team will also provide sensory kits, a designated quiet space and ASL interpreters for increased accessibility during the event.
