Summer is coming in hot and Parks Tacoma is here to help keep your days full of fun!

Remember, recreation has benefits to your mental and physical health. Bring your family out to our free activities and get started on a lifetime of fun and good health.

There are so many free events and opportunities between now and Labor Day that our calendar is almost full to overflowing. Whether you’re planning to revisit your favorite picnic spots from years past or explore a new trail, this list is full of ideas on ways to entertain, educate, and make fun summer memories without spending a dime.

Discovering Defiance: Drop-In Hikes

Hike with a Park Guide every Saturday starting from the Fort Nisqually Picnic Shelter at 9 am. The walk will average 3 miles at a leisurely pace and can be tailored to participant interest and time for a different route each week.

Family Nature Walks

(Ages 3+) Explore Tacoma Parks during these naturalist-led walks. Discover the amazing plants and animals that live in these parks and how they adapt in the different seasons.

Tots on the Trail

See Point Defiance from a kids’ point of view. Early walkers and confident toddlers and their parent/guardian are invited to join Park Guide Jenn on a child-led hike through Point Defiance Park.

You’re never too young to enjoy the outdoors. This program is for ages 18 months and younger and their parent/guardian. Siblings are welcome.

Summer Late Nights

Summer Late Nights 

Where: Various locations

When: Monday-Friday, 5-10 pm from June 22-August 28 (except July 3)

Event Info: Free for middle and high school students, Learn More

Middle and high school students can get dinner every night and participate in open gym, art and music activities, and hang out with friends.

This is a drop-in program, and students can attend as often as they like.

 

Spraygrounds

Staying cool when temperatures heat up 1

When: Seven days a week, 10 am-7 pm until September 7

Event Info: Free at various public parks, learn more here.

Splish splash! Stay cool this summer with spraygrounds located at 9 public parks around Tacoma. These facilities are open seven days a week from 10 am to 8 pm through Labor Day weekend, and then on weekends only until October 1. Check the website to find a sprayground near you.

Agents of Discovery

Free app-guided tour

Where: Select Tacoma Parks

When: Seven days a week, during park hours

Perfect for families looking to spend time outdoors, Agents of Discovery is a free, educational app to get youth active, engaged, and learning about the world around them. Once downloaded the app does not require any data or WiFi to play. Challenges are geo-triggered as you walk the trails at eight different parks and change seasonally so the fun can continue year-round.
